Eligibility and Types of Permits

• National Residence Permit

You shall have qualified if you were abroad for more than three years in Hungary, or were married to a Hungarian citizen/long-term resident for two years, or had an ancestral relationship. Such requirements include stable accommodation, sufficient income, comprehensive health insurance, good-character clearance from a notary, and an exam in basic Hungarian cultural knowledge.

• EU Residence Card

This is for those who have held legal residence for five continuous years in Hungary. Holders of an EU Blue Card can apply for this document after certain periods of stay in Hungary and the EU, respectively, have been completed. Other requirements for accommodation, finance, health cover, and exam apply in a similar fashion.

Application Process & Validity

• The applicants must gather documents like a valid passport, proof of continuous legal residence, proof of accommodation, financial stability, health insurance, and a certificate of good conduct (for a national card).
• A cultural examination of Hungarian history and society is required (with up to three attempts).
• The card is valid for ten years. It may be revoked under certain conditions, like being absent from Hungary for over six consecutive months (longer time limits apply for the EU card) or failing to meet obligations.
